about

Unapologetically black. The writer, Mychal “Myke” Thompson, was born, raised and frequently traumatized in beautiful California. At a very young age, he learned to navigate the daily struggles of being the uncomfortably odd, token black guy of the predominantly white town of Bakersfield through writing and comedy. Despite being very different from everyone else in personality, color, and aspiration, his life was always about making the best of the worst. The best, he was fairly popular. The worst, he was popular because he was one of the few black kids. The series of miscellaneous events that made up his childhood and adolescence brought forth the creation of his own personal mantra, “Never let anything you can’t absolutely change, get you down.” Things you can’t change: skin color, age, family, life, death, other people. As for everything else, he believes it will always change for the better one way or another. We can be the product of oppression or we become it’s worst opponent.

His old-school, play-no-games mama taught him to read and write at a very early age like he was a freed slave on the run, and from that point forward, he never stopped using words as weapons to defend himself from the bigotry and bullsh*t that pollutes our world on a daily basis. In a miraculous black Cinderella story (just like the one with Brandy and Whitney Houston), he survived the subliminally-intolerant moderates and country-blaring good ol’ boys of Bakersfield and moved to Orange County (where he survived the subliminally-intolerant moderates and country-blaring housewives) to attend Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts for screenwriting. While attending Chapman University, he connected with a couple of freaks and geeks and eventually moved to Los Angeles where he’s currently working as a freelance writer and Gratitude in Beverly Hills.
